Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme NSW
Households and small businesses that install a renewable energy system may be eligible to benefit from the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which supports small solar installations like residential solar panels, to reduce the purchase cost. What’s more is this scheme provides a financial incentive for homeowners and businesses. The total benefit amount received from this subsidy varies based on a number of different factors.
Are you wondering if you’re eligible for this incentive? Download our free guide for in-depth information on the current solar incentives and rebates available in NSW.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
The solar rebate consists of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that are created after an eligible solar system is installed. The value assigned to these certificates can be redeemed by way of selling or assigning them. How many STCs you can receive are based on factors including, but not limited to:
- The total amount of renewable electricity generated by your solar system or how much electricity consumption is reduced.
- The climate zone where your system is installed.
- The size of your solar system.
For example, in Sydney under this scheme, if you purchase a 6 kWh solar system you could receive up to $2,664 based on an STC rate of $36.
It is important to note that in order to claim the rebate, a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited solar installer must be involved in the installation process.
Eligibility for Solar Rebates in NSW
In order to qualify for STCs, households must have small-scale renewable systems that are eligible for said certificates. Some of these systems include:
- Solar photovoltaic panels
- Solar water heaters
- Wind turbines
- Hydro systems
- Air source heat pumps
Upon receiving these credits, owners can either assign them to an eligible system installer in exchange for a predetermined discount or cash payment.
STCs may also be sold through a designated STC market with variable prices that are subject to the current market or through the STCs Clearing House.
