Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme SA
Solar owners in SA may be eligible to participate in a federal scheme known as the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). The SRES encourages homeowners and small business owners to install small-scale renewable energy systems by offering Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) in SA
Small-scale technology certificates are generated upon the installation of an accredited renewable solar system. These tradable certificates can be traded yourself or assigned to an eligible retailer in exchange for a cash payment or a designated set discount off your solar system.
For example, in Adelaide under this scheme, if you purchase a 6 kWh solar system you could receive up to $3,664 based on an STC rate of $36
Eligibility for Small-scale Technology Certificates in SA
It is important that consumers and business owners are aware of the eligibility requirements before setting out to purchase a solar system. Certain considerations should be made including:
- The type of solar system;
- Whether the system and parts are approved and eligible under the small-scale renewable energy target; and
- The financial benefits you may be eligible to receive.
Your system must be compliant with all state, local, and federal requirements. To be eligible and classified as small-scale, they must be, according to the Clean Energy Regulator:
- A solar panel system with a capacity that does not exceed more than 100 kW, and has a total annual electricity output of less than 250 MWh;
- A wind system with a capacity that does not exceed more than 10kW, and has a total annual electricity output of less than MWh; or
- A hydro system with a capacity that does not exceed more than 6.4 kW, and has a total annual electricity output of less than 25 MWh.
